A Nation Enraptured in Pure Superstition

Anyone who knows me knows that I have no use for religions, gods or devils. I guess I've never seen the need for any of them.

When I was a kid, I tried the whole faith thing. I went to church. I prayed. And not one of my prayers was ever really answered. On the times I thought that God was talking to me, I now realize he never told me anything I didn't already know or that I couldn't figure out for myself.

When I hear of others who say that God spoke to them, I've noticed that God doesn't seem to tell them anything they don't want to hear. God has never told Pat Robertson, "Sorry, Pat, but you're just wrong about this." God never told Jerry Falwell to be more open minded. God didn't tell George W. Bush, "This war you want to wage is really something you should reconsider." God just seems to reinforce these folks' most questionable behaviors.

But these leaders aren't alone. The vast majority of people in this nation believe that there's some grand, invisible creator who has put all of the universe into being simply for the sake of human beings.

Our two presidential candidates are practically falling over themselves to pander to this deluded populace. There are news stories and political meetings over the faith of these candidates.

This is nuts! Should we pick a leader based on his belief in a huge imaginary friend? How about picking a leader who can think?
